Bergzicht Food Service Assistant Programme: Empowering Stellenbosch’s future workforce
Bergzicht Training and Development, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Stellenbosch, has been dedicated to empowering individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds for over three decades. Now in its 33rd year, Bergzicht continues to provide high-quality education and job placement services, equipping learners with the essential skills to secure meaningful employment and break free from poverty.
As part of a town-wide youth employment initiative in the tourism sector, Bergzicht partners with Visit Stellenbosch to enhance employment opportunities for young people. One of its flagship initiatives, the Food Service Assistant (FSA) Programme, addresses the need for well-trained junior kitchen staff in Stellenbosch’s restaurants and accommodation establishments.
A Structured Path to Success
Bergzicht follows a comprehensive, four-phase training model to equip students with essential skills and ensure sustainable employment:
The iPower Programme provides foundational life skills training for all students, followed by specialised vocational training in Food Service Assistance and other fields. Once trained, students receive certification and structured job placement support, ensuring they are well-prepared for employment. Additionally, Bergzicht offers 12 months of post-certification mentoring and employment retention guidance, creating a holistic approach that empowers students to build independent careers and achieve long-term success in the workforce.

Industry partnerships for workplace experience
Bergzicht collaborates with leading establishments in the hospitality industry to provide hands-on training through its Workplace Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme. Restaurants and accommodation establishments are encouraged to offer internships for students, as these practical learning opportunities are essential to their training. Each group consists of 12 students and businesses interested in participating can contact Corine Mans at Bergzicht at studentsupport@bergzicht.org.za.
Workplace Integrated Learning (WIL) Schedule – 2025
Students in the FSA Programme complete WIL placements in five structured cohorts throughout the year:
